Observed and unobserved heterogeneity in failure data analysis

نویسندگان

چکیده

In reality, failure data are often collected under diffract operational conditions (covariates), leading to heterogeneity among the data. Heterogeneity can be classified as observed and unobserved heterogeneity. Un-observed is effect of unknown, unrecorded, or missing covariates. most reliability studies, covariates neglected. This may lead inaccurate modeling, consequently, wrong operation maintenance decisions. There a lack systematic approach model covariate in analysis. paper aims present framework for analysis presence Here, will analyzed using frailty models. A case study illustrate application framework.

Observed and Unobserved Preference Heterogeneity In Brand Choice Models

In deciding what brand to buy consumers trade off between how valuable each brand is to them and its price. Scanner data based brand choice models that evaluate this trade off and allow for unobserved heterogeneity are a very popular topic. We extend this line of research by explicitly incorporating brand preferences rather than just utilizing brand specific constants and past purchase behavior...

Count Data Models with Correlated Unobserved Heterogeneity

As previously argued, the correlation between included and omitted regressors generally causes inconsistency of standard estimators for count data models. Non-linear instrumental variables estimation of an exponential model under conditional moment restrictions is one of the proposed remedies. This approach is extended here by fully exploiting the model assumptions and thereby improving efficie...

The Contribution of Observed and Unobserved Fundamentals to Exchange Rate Movements in Iran

Using a State-space model, this paper investigates the contribution of both observed and unobserved fundamentals to nominal exchange rate movement in Iran for the period 1991:2-2011:4. To this end, we follow Engel and West (2005) and Balke et al. (2013) and use an asset-pricing approach to develop a rational expectations present value exchange rate model. In order to examine the role of fun...

Discretizing Unobserved Heterogeneity∗

We study panel data estimators based on a discretization of unobserved heterogeneity when individual heterogeneity is not necessarily discrete in the population. We focus on two-step grouped-fixed effects estimators, where individuals are classified into groups in a first step using kmeans clustering, and the model is estimated in a second step allowing for group-specific heterogeneity. We anal...

Unobserved Heterogeneity in Longitudinal Data An Empirical Bayes Perspective

Abstract. Empirical Bayes methods for Gaussian and binomial compound decision problems involving longitudinal data are considered. A new convex optimization formulation of the nonparametric (Kiefer-Wolfowitz) maximum likelihood estimator for mixture models is used to construct nonparametric Bayes rules for compound decisions. The methods are illustrated with some simulation examples as well as ...
